HOLIDAY LIGHTS
For the past 25 winters, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall’s stately trees have been aglow with festive holiday lights. This iconic seasonal display — inspired by the illuminated tree-lined boulevards of Paris — was the vision of the late Boston Parks Commissioner Justine Mee Liff and philanthropists Joan and Ted Bernard Cutler. Their sense of civic pride inspired others in the neighborhood to join in support, and the all-volunteer Committee to Light the Commonwealth Avenue Mall was born.
Today, neighbors, local businesses, and like-minded organizations continue to come together to raise the needed support for this beloved annual tradition. The Friends is building on the remarkable legacy of the Cutlers and the Committee — illuminating the Mall from early December to late March, from Arlington Street to Charlesgate.
The Mall’s seasonal magic is made possible entirely by the philanthropic support of individuals, foundations, and corporations. We invite you to join in making this tradition possible by sponsoring a tree, an entire Mall block, or any portion of this holiday favorite with a charitable gift of any size. Your contribution will keep the Mall glowing this winter and support its care year-round.
The Friends is proud to steward this special holiday tradition and excited to work with you to secure its future!
