As the warm summer months approach, our Parks Care team has been ramping up their efforts to keep your parks in tip-top shape for the coming season.
We recently wrapped up the installation of 36 new trees throughout the Common, Garden, and Mall, the most recent being 8 new trees in the Public Garden and 14 in the Boston Common, funded by the Boston Common Maintenance Trust Fund. Keep your eyes peeled for our “I’m New Here” signs to discover the variety of species planted in your parks.
All three parks have been aerated, overseeded and fertilized. This year, we invested in more detailed seeding efforts in hopes of growing stronger turf along pathway edges. Additionally, compost tea (a liquid product obtained by extracting beneficial microorganisms and soluble nutrients from compost) was applied to the Public Garden and targeted areas of the Common.
The Boston Common restroom trailer is now open daily from 7 AM – 9 PM! This year, our featured artist is Artist for Humanity teen Dorothy Christian. We are proud to spotlight talented youth in our community and provide these essential facilities to park users through the fall.
We recently celebrated our annual Arbor Day of Service, where six of our park contractors came together on Boston Common. Crews donated trees and their labor in celebration of the joy and health that trees bring to all. We also handed out free tree saplings to our community and encouraged them to Plant it Forward for a greener and greater future. Thank you to our friends at Barrett Tree East, Bartlett Tree Experts, Cambridge Landscape Company, Hartney Greymont Tree Company, Matthew R. Foti Landscape Design and Construction, and Tree Specialists, Inc. for their efforts. You can spot the new trees at the Boylston & Charles corner of the Common.
