The Boston Water & Sewer Commission has just shared a project update with anticipated impacts related to the ongoing Boston Common Water Main Rehabilitation Project. The four access points along the Beacon Street Mall will remain closed for the duration of the project.

The pipe reconnection and pressure testing work is ongoing. Due to the proximity of the excavation sites to the Beacon Street park entrances, BWSC has informed us that they cannot be safely reopened to pedestrian traffic until the area is backfilled. It is expected that this will be completed by the end of next week. Additionally, the remaining fencing between Joy Street and the Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial will also be removed by that time. The project is on track to be completely by the permit end date of 4/11. We will continue to update our community as this project progresses and additional entrances reopen.

The Friends has successfully coordinated with BWSC and their contractors to ensure the installation of additional wayfinding signs. This signage is intended to alleviate pedestrian confusion and help protect the turf by limiting pedestrian desire lines.

BWSC has ensured that all impacted areas of pavement and landscaping will be restored to pre-construction conditions once the project is complete. The Friends will work to confirm that all restoration efforts have been completed in a satisfactory manner.

In case of emergency, please contact BWSC’s 24/7 hotline at 617-989-7000. For other maintenance concerns, we recommend using the Boston 311 app to file a report directly with the City of Boston.
