Late last month, our Parks Care team began the first tree care efforts of 2025, focusing on two large Elms adjacent to the Bagheera Fountain in the Public Garden. Careful pruning ensures that we are able to maintain the shape and characteristics of this stately and iconic species. Proactive tree care measures like this preserve the health and beauty of the Elms, while ensuring their longevity.
A large tree care project has also begun this month near the Ballfields on the Common. Our team will oversee extensive pruning, focusing on crown elevation and thinning, removing dead or decaying branches to improve aesthetics and safety for all that commute or walk along this busy Common corridor.
While expert care is provided to the 1,700 trees throughout the Common, Garden, and Mall, the forces of nature can’t always be held at bay. 15 trees adjacent to McArthur Mall, Parkman Bandstand, Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and Railroad Mall, primarily Elms, will be removed by the end of February. Each of these trees will be replaced in the spring via the Boston Common Maintenance Trust Fund.
