On Wednesday, the Friends of the Public Garden, in collaboration with the Lend A Hand Society, celebrated two events; the Friends’ restoration of the terrace of the Edward Everett Hale memorial and the 125th anniversary of the charitable organization founded by Hale, the Lend A Hand Society.

The Friends’ Executive Director Liz Vizza spoke about the importance of bringing new life to sculpture in our parks through capital projects, and Friend’s member Steve Jonas spoke about his admiration for Hale and the statue. This restoration was made possible by the generosity of Steve and Cheryl Jonas, who created an endowment for ongoing care of the memorial. Lend A Hand Society’s Board Chair Nancy Inui recounted the history of Hale, his importance, and the impact of his organization’s work on families across Boston.

A younger Edward Everett Hale himself made a surprise appearance at the event, speaking in his own words about helping others, patriotism and the value of charity.

Thank you to all who came to help celebrate famed Bostonian Edward Everett Hale!
