Welcome

The Friends of the Public Garden works to protect and improve Boston’s first public parks — the Boston Common, Public Garden, and Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

A membership organization open to all, the Friends was founded in 1970 by concerned citizens. Working closely with the Boston Parks Department, we support ongoing improvements to the parks. Since 1970, we have funded the expert care of trees and plantings and the maintenance and restoration of sculptures and fountains. We work as staunch advocates to protect the parks from misuse and encroachment.

ADVOCACY UPDATE: WINTHROP SQUARE

June 16, 2017  — Update from Executive Director, Elizabeth Vizza

We have been in discussions with the Mayor’s Office, the BPDA, and Millennium to express our deep concerns about the impact the Winthrop Square tower will have on the Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. We appreciate the Mayor’s responsiveness to these concerns.

While we still have strong reservations about a one-time amendment to laws that have worked to protect our parks while allowing development to continue in downtown Boston, we acknowledge that the City Council, with its 10-3 vote in favor of the home rule petition, spoke with a clear voice.

As champions of these parks who have invested in their care for nearly 50 years, we have a strong stake in their healthy future. To that end, we are working toward an outcome that will result in stronger park protections, a significant investment in the parks, and a comprehensive planning process for downtown development.

The bill has just been filed at the State House (House bill number HB3749), and at some point there will be a hearing. It has been assigned to the Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government, and you can find hearing dates at https://malegislature.gov.
